Every year in the United Kingdom, people celebrate Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day, with a fun and traditional event called the pancake race. This custom dates back to the 15th century. According to legend, it began when a woman, hearing the church bell while she was cooking, ran to the service still holding her frying pan and flipping her pancake.

During a pancake race, participants run along a set course while holding a frying pan and tossing a pancake into the air. The goal is to reach the finish line first without dropping the pancake. The races are often held in villages, schools, and towns across the UK, and they bring together people of all ages.

This year, Grade 5 at our school is also taking part in the tradition by reenacting their own pancake race. Students will wear aprons, hold frying pans, and race while flipping pancakes or substitutes — just like the classic British custom. It’s a fun way to learn about English culture while enjoying a bit of friendly competition!
